The Truth about wife beating from the hadiths is this:  
The Man is the absolute master in the house. Beating your wife is definitely allowed in Islam. It should not be as severe as beating your slave. Thats all. 
You can beat your wife (lovingly !!) pretty good. Make it count!! Just do not break her bones! If you do, she may be able to leave and get a divorce. 
So, bruising, blue marks, red marks, ..etc are all okay. Just dont go too violently in beating her so as to break her bones. In fact, it is preferred to use a stick or a whip to beat your wife with (easier than using your hand, thats for sure!!). This is what I deduced from an honest reading of the Quran and the Hadith about wife beating.
