Un viejo conocido, de los mejores cuya obra conocí...

Apodado"el ojo del siglo", el fotógrafo francés Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) hubiera cumplido 100 años el 22 de agosto y para no olvidarlo, una exposición, dos coloquios y varias obras recuerdan su legendaria maestría.
La Fundación Henri Cartier-Bresson, creada en 2003 en París por el fotógrafo, organiza a partir de septiembre un homenaje, el "más conforme al personaje, que detestaba las celebraciones", indicó a la AFP su directora, Agnes Sire.
El homenaje a uno de los fotógrafos franceses más conocidos universalmente, considerado el "padre" del fotoperiodismo, tomará primero forma de exposición, "Henri Cartier-Bresson - Walker Evans", en recuerdo al trabajo que ambos gigantes desempeñaron paralelamente en Estados Unidos entre 1929 y 1947.
La exposición estará abierta del 10 de septiembre al 21 de diciembre.
"Cartier-Bresson no se interesaba enormemente por la fotografía, prefería la pintura y la literatura", dijo Sire.
El estadounidense Walker Evans (1903-1975) forma parte, con André Kertesz y Eugene Atget, del muy reducido número de fotógrafos que "tenían derecho a su reconocimiento", añadió.
Las 43 imágenes seleccionadas, todas ellas tirajes de época, fueron realizadas entre 1929 y 1943 en grandes ciudades estadounidenses.
Para apoyar esa exposición conjunta, tendrán lugar dos coloquios: en Cerisy-la-Salle (oeste), del 4 al 7 de octubre y en el Petit Palais de París, los días 14 y 15 de noviembre.
Una treintena de especialistas o fotógrafos, entre ellos Peter Galassi, curador del MoMa (Museum of Modern Art) de Nueva York y el fotógrafo francés Raymond Depardon, tienen confirmada su asistencia.
En el capítulo de publicaciones, la editorial Steidl se encargará del catálogo de la exposición de la
FUndación, y Gallimard sacará el primer libro de la colección "Découvertes" consagrado a un fotógrafo, firmado por Clément Chéroux, curador de exposiciones del Centro Pompidou.
Una retrospectiva sobre la obra de Cartier-Bresson tuvo un enorme éxito en 2003 en la Biblioteca Nacional de Francia.
El MoMa, donde Cartier-Bresson fue el primer fotógrafo en protagonizar una exposición, como sucedió en el Louvre, prepara una gran exposición para 2010.
Henri Cartier-Bresson, un fotógrafo humanista de gran exigencia, recorrió el mundo y cofundó en 1947 la agencia Magnum Photos. Ayudante en su juventud del cineasta Jean Renoir, también filmó documentales sobre la Guerra Civil española y sobre Estados Unidos.

The Sandman

Neil Richard Gaiman (born November 10, 1960) is an English author of science fiction and fantasy short stories and novels, graphic novels, comics, and films. His notable works include The Sandman comic series, Stardust, and American Gods.
In the late 1980s, he wrote Don't Panic: The Official Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Companion
in what he calls a "classic English humour" style. Following on from
that he wrote the opening of what would become his collaboration with Terry Pratchett on the comic novel Good Omens, about the impending apocalypse

no es mi intención discutir este tema controversial en este momento particular. De todos modos, deseo que sepa que no rehuyo la controversia. Por el contrario, tomaré posición en cualquier punto y en cualquier oportunidad, sin importar cuán controversial pueda serlo.
Ud me preguntó qué pienso del alcohol. Esta es mi posición al respecto:
Si cuando Ud. dice alcohol se refiere al brebaje del diablo, al azote venenoso , al monstruo sanguinario que aniquila la inocencia, destrona la razón, crea miseria y pobreza, toma el pan de las bocas de los niños; si se refiere a aquel trago maldito que desnuda al hombre y mujer cristianos de los pináculos de lo honesto, vida fácil a la caida en el pozo sin fondo de degradación y desesperanza, vergüenza y desamparo y desesperación.... Pues con seguridad estoy en contra de él con todas mis fuerzas.

ATTRIBUTION: Author unknown. According to former Representative D. R. Billy Matthews, this story was told in the early 1960s by another member of Congress, who did not know the author. It purports to be the reply of a congressman to a constituent who had written the congressman to ask, “Where do you stand on whiskey?”
