Caliber: at the beginning the denomination indicated only the size of a watch movement.
Today, caliber designs a precise movement type, indicating the size, the style (men/ladies’ – mechanical / automatic/ Quartz - number of hands – calendars – complications), followed by the mark of the Ebauches manufacturer (e.g. see [1] ), duly registered with the Swiss Federal Trademark Office as well as by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry FH.
Each single Swiss Made movement must be marked with the caliber indication.
Following WTO’s rules applicable for Custom’s & Excise, the precise caliber must be indicated on each export invoice with the coordinated international Custom’s code.
Proper markings and calibre indication has become all the more important with the increased counterfeiting of “bona fide” Swiss Watch Brands.
The only caliber used in common by Vacheron, Audemars and Patek was in fact caliber 1120 which replaced caliber 1072. To the best of my knowledge its the only caliber used in common by the "Big Three"
Cal 1120 was manufactured in 1967 by Jaeger-LeCoultre as caliber 920 for
Vacheron Constantin,
Audemars Piguet and
Patek Philippe
and only used by them, JLC didn't use this movement in any of its timepieces either.
Vacheron Constantin used it as calibers 1120/1121 and 1122.
Audemars Piguet used it as calibers 2120/2121/2122 and
Patek Philippe as caliber 28-255.
The latter used in in the first Nautilus models and continued for 10 years.
Many watchmakers I have talked to (and who do not work at VC) consider caliber 1120 to be one of the best and iconic automatic calibers.
